Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine produced by Château Haut-Brion, one of the five classified First Growths in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. As part of the portfolio of Domaine Clarence Dillon, which includes the renowned Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion, and Château Quintus, the wine is also crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality as its grand vin counterpart.

Having carried the name Château Bahans Haut-Brion at the beginning of the twentieth century, the wine was eventually renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion beginning with the 2007 vintage as a tribute to Clarence Dillon, who acquired the Haut-Brion property in 1935. Clarence Dillon is an American banker whose descendants continue to oversee the operation of the wine to this day. According to history, Clarence visited Château Haut-Brion during a trip to France in 1934. On his way back to the United States, he received a telegram informing him that he could purchase Haut-Brion as long as he acted fast. He did just that. The purchase was finalized on May 13th, 1935 and thus began the modern history of Haut-Brion. The Dillon family adores France and its way of life. From 1935 to the present day, no other vineyard has been linked to an American family for as long as Haut-Brion.

The vineyards stretch across an area of 51 hectares, 48 of which are planted with red grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. About 3 hectares are devoted to white grape varieties such as Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Gris. The vineyards of Château Haut-Brion, and by extension Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, are blessed with a diverse array of soil types. The gravel at Château Haut-Brion, which consists of small stones of various types of quartz, is a key element that contributes to the soil’s valuable wine-making potential. The gravelly soils additionally lie upon a unique subsoil of clay, sand, limestone and shelly sand.

The 2019 vintage of Le Clarence de Haut-Brion brings forth intense and complex aromatic depth, with aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum. Notes of cedar, tobacco, and subtle hints of violets also add additional layers of complexity. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, with flavors mirroring the nose. Ripe black fruits dominate, accompanied by nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, and leather. Firm and ripe tannins provide structure and depth, while vibrant acidity adds freshness and balance. The finish is long and lingering, with a harmonious interplay of fruit, tannins, and oak.

Given its impressive structure, balanced acidity, and depth of flavor, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2019 is likely to benefit from medium to long-term aging. With careful storage in ideal conditions (cool, dark, and humid), the wine has the potential to develop additional complexity, secondary aromas, and tertiary flavors over the next decade or more.

Tasting Notes

"The 2019 Le Clarence De Haut-Brion shows classic Pessac elegance in its beautiful bouquet of pure cassis and darker currant fruits as well as smoked tobacco, scorched earth, violets, and truffly earth. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated second wine that has notable structure, plenty of incredibly fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. It unquestionably shows classic Haut-Brion character and is a classy, balanced, elegant Pessac to drink over the coming 15-20 years." Jeb Dunnuck, Bordeaux 2019 From Bottle (4/11/2022) Rating: 94 Drink: 2022-2042

"The 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a blend of 72.8% Merlot, 16.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10.9% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 10th of September to the 3rd of October. The estimated label alcohol degree is 15%. With a deep garnet-purple color, it springs from the glass with vivacious notes of crushed black and red plums, redcurrant jelly and wild blueberries plus suggestions of forest floor, lilacs, black olives and menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate practically quivers with energy, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering aniseed note. Simply delicious!" - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, Ratings: 92-94

''Aromas of rich, plummy fruit, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and toasty oak preface the 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy wine with fine depth at the core, succulent acids and powdery tannins. Ample and enveloping, it's more demonstrative than its counterpart, La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion from across the street.'' William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (04/07/2022) Rating: 91 Drink: 2022-2042

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. As of June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. Accordingly, such import taxes are now suspended for the next five years.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
