Wine Notes: Mouton was not listed among the original First Growths. It was only one of two wines that made it onto the 1855 classification of the wines of Medoc, the other being Château Cantemerle which many felt was unjustifiably neglected and excluded in 1855 and the oversight was corrected the next year when Cantemerle was brought onto the classification list in 1856.  Mouton's elevation, however, didn't come until an official re-classification in 1973.  The late Baron Philippe de Rothschild single-handedly created and elevated the status of Mouton Rothschild.  When he could not count his wine among the first growths, his wine label defiantly stated "Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis" ("First I cannot be, second I will not call myself, Mouton I am").

Tasting Notes

"Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2012 Mouton-Rothschild clearly has the upper hand over the 2011, if not quite at the level of the 2009, 2010 and what I envisage will be the 2015. There is obviously greater fruit intensity here, as if the contrast has been dialed up a couple of notches. It is quite showy on the nose, preening in its infancy with pure black cherries, graphite and hints of cold slate-like scents, later that hint of seaweed I observed when tasted blind a few months earlier. The palate is beautifully balanced with great vim and vigor. This is a Mouton that will not be put down - vivacious, vivid and delineated with wonderful focus and crucially, impressive persistence on the finish. Do not underestimate this Mouton-Rothschild, because I can see an upswing as it matures in bottle. Tasted April 2016." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (1/31/2017, Interim Issue), Ratings: 96, Drink: 2025-2050

Effective October 18, 2019, the US Trade Representative's Office imposed a new 25% value-added tax (i.e., import tariffs) on a wide range of European products (including French wine, Italian cheese and single malt Scotch whisky) to penalize EU subsidies for Airbus.  EU has made counter-claims agains the US subsidies for Boeing.  A ruling by WTO on EU's counter-claims is expected in the spring of 2020.

For any Futures (en primeur) and Pre-Arrival items, our current prices are shown before taxes and tariffs.  Prior to shipment, we may have to collect any tariffs levied by the US government at the time. Tariffs will be based on the date of importation and the rate of US tariffs in place at the time.  Current rules exempt wines with alcohol content above 14.5% from the newly imposed 25% tariffs. We will offer free storage in our professional wine cellar in Bordeaux in the event of any delay in importation caused by the uncertainties created by tariffs.

If you believe these tariffs are NOT in the best interest of US consumers like yourself, please consider writing to your congressional representatives to let them hear your voice.  You can find out how to contact your representatives here using this directory provided by the US Congress.
