For those looking to enjoy some of the finest offerings of the Médoc at just a fraction of the cost, Château Lanessan is a true find, indeed.  Robert Parker Jr wrote in his tome on Bordeaux, “This wine could probably be given serious consideration for Fifth Growth status should any reclassification of the wines of the Médoc take place.”  Simply put, Château Lanessan is bottled elegance priced at a steal.  With refined tannins, bright red fruit and fantastic ageability, Château Lanessan is an excellent value wine that is perfect for novices and connoisseurs alike.

Château Lanessan hosts a long and impressive history that dates back to the late 18th Century when it was founded by Jean Delbos.  The vineyards were a lot smaller, but the stunning Tudor-style château was built back then.  The property has been in the hands of the Bouteliller family, who are direct descendants of Jean Delbos.  The Bouteliller family has two passions – wine and horses.  There are plenty of stables built on the grounds, constructed in the shape of a horseshoe.  There is also a museum devoted to historical carriages at the property and the vast expansive acres of parkland and greenery make Château Lanessan a beautiful place to visit in the Médoc.

The Bouteliller family made some intelligent hiring decisions, such as bringing on Hubert de Bouard of Château Angelus to consult at the property.  In 2009 Château Lanessan became managed by Paz Espejo.  Spanish-born and self-made, Paz Espejo studied oenology in Bordeaux in 1991.  Paz was a trailblazer, entering a field with very few women helming many estates at the time.  Paz proved herself as a force to be reckoned with as a keen, sharp figure within the wine industry.  She takes an eco-friendly approach and is very committed to sustainable viticulture.  Paz made dramatic improvements at Château Lanessan and is taking the estate to new heights both in terms of critical acclaim and tourism.

The sprawling, 80 hectare vineyard is planted with a mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The philosophy at Château Lanessan is all about the work that is done on the vineyard.  The Bouteliller family believes in quality fruit first and foremost, then with a mixture of hard work in the vat room all the pieces fall together, and an excellent wine is crafted. Château Lanessan has some extraordinary neighbors within the Saint-Julién appellation like Château Lagrange, Château Beychevelle and Château Gruauad Larose.  The vines thrive on porous, gravel-based soil which is perfect for drainage.  They are all harvested and optically sorted prior to being vinified in traditional concrete vats and aged in a combination of new and gently used oak barrels for about a year.

Château Lanessan is a stylish, classic and age worthy wine from the Médoc.  It is the perfect wine for those who are new to Bordeaux blends yet has the restraint and elegance of some of the Classified Growths.  A favorite wine of many, Château Lanessan is the perfect weeknight wine.

Tasting Notes

"The 2015 Lanessan has quite a punchy, fruit-driven bouquet with well-integrated oak, a Lanessan with more sense of purpose than I have found in recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannin, leading to a smooth and harmonious finish, which lingers nicely in the mouth. You know, this is the best Lanessan for a long time, perchance because Mon. De Bouard is consulting?" - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (4/27/2016, Issue 224), Rating: 90-92, Drink: 2019 - 2032

"Impressive ripe blackberry and darker plum fruits with notes of earth and warm stones. The palate has a supple, even-paced and fresh fruited heart of red cherry and plum fruits. Smooth tannins flow long." - James Suckling, Ratings: 93
