• Domaine: Château Barde-Haut
• Appellation: Saint-Emilion
• Classification: Grand Cru Classé
• Origin: Right Bank, Bordeaux, France

Château Barde-Haut is home to some mythic terroir.  With neighbors like Saint-Émilion legends – Château Troplong Mondot, Château Pavie Macquin, and the Thienpont property, L’If, the logical conclusion would be fantastic expressions of grand vin are produced at this incredible Grand Crus Classés property.   Château Barde-Haut experienced a meteoric rise in quality since the mid 1990s, after a series of sweeping changes were made both in the vineyard and the vat room.  The wine keeps improving year after year, making it one of the Right Bank's rising stars that still sells for a relatively affordable price.

The history of Château Barde-Haut really began in the modern era, when Hélène Garcin purchased the estate from Dominique Philippe, who was already unveiling the estate’s potential to craft fantastic terroir-driven wines.  For those who aren’t familiar, Hélène is the owner of the legendary estate, Clos L’Eglise.  Shortly after the property was acquired, a massive renovation was completed in 2012.  The emphasis was on sustainability and energy efficiency.  Château Barde-Haute has a green roof with solar panels in addition to filters that collect, clean and recycle rainwater.  A small wind turbine creates energy that powers the outdoor lighting on the property.  This modern, minimalist design makes Château Barde-Haut one of the first major properties to go fully green.  Château Barde-Haut is certified sustainable with a High Environmental Value of 3.

Château Barde-Haut is a 17-hectare estate that is planted with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.  A replanting program has been implemented to increase the amount of Cabernet Franc and decrease the amount of Merlot.  The estate possesses the type of terroir one dreams of.  A beautiful amphitheater of vines, with South facing exposure  sits on a limestone plateau.  There is plenty of good elevation here, which the vines need to thrive.   Château Barde-Haut also hosts the perfect mixture of clay and limestone soils that assist in providing the vines with perfect nutrients and absorb water during drought-ridden years.

The vines are an average of 35 years, though the estate hosts some exceedingly old Cabernet Franc vines.  The estate is managed by Hélène and her husband Patrice.  Patrice focuses on the vineyard management while Hélène works on crafting the beautiful wine from this estate.  The family also has a team of gifted consultants like Doctor Alain Raynaud and Thomas Duclos who provided guidance during each vintage.  Typically, the vines are all harvested by hand prior to being vinified in the gravity fed vat room.  The grand vin is vinified in a mixture of stainless steel tanks and concrete vats.  It is then aged in mostly new French oak barrels for 18 months.  For those who love wines with an exquisite amount of power from oak ageing, Château Barde-Haut is the perfect wine.  Château Barde-Haut requires a bit of time to lay down in good vintages.  It possesses the perfect mixture of purity of fruit integrated with oak, coupled with a distinctive mineral-driven quality that is  associated with Saint-Émilion wine.

Tasting Notes

"The 2018 Barde-Haut is a rich, heady wine. Crème de cassis, blackberry jam, chocolate, leather and spice race out of the glass in this flamboyant, exotically ripe Saint-Émilion. There is no shortage of stuffing, but the wine needs time to come together. Specifically, the new oak needs to integrate more fully, but this is a barrel sample, and it is not uncommon to see wines at this stage showing this way. The more exotic side of the vintage is very much on display. The harvest ranged from September 29 to October 12, which is relatively drawn out by the estate's standards." - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, (April, 2019) Rating: 92-95

"The 2018 Barde-Haut is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it takes a little swirling to unlock the beautifully expressive notes of warm black plums, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus hints of roses, underbrush, ground cloves and fertile loam. The full-bodied palate delivers a lively backbone and wonderfully ripe, satiny tannins supporting the generous black and red fruits, finishing long and fragrant." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (03/31/2021), Rating: 93+ Drink: 2023-2043

Saint-Émilion is one of the most prestigious wine appellations in the Bordeaux region of France, renowned for its exceptional red wines and rich viticultural history. Located on the Right Bank of the Dordogne River, Saint-Émilion is a place of great beauty and a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its remarkable blend of natural and cultural attributes. The Saint-Émilion appellation is characterized by a diverse terroir featuring a mix of limestone, clay, and sandy soils that provide the foundation for its distinctive wines. The unique microclimates and elevations within the appellation contribute to the variety of flavors and styles found in Saint-Émilion wines.

The primary grape varieties used in Saint-Émilion wines are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot often dominating the blends. These grapes thrive in the region's favorable climate, moderated by the proximity of the Dordogne River and the buffering effects of the limestone plateau.

Saint-Émilion is famous for its unique wine classification system, which divides the vineyards into four tiers: Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Premier Grand Cru Classé B, Grand Cru Classé, and Grand Cru. This classification reflects the quality and prestige of the individual vineyards and châteaux within the appellation, with only a select few achieving the highest ranking of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. Until the re-classification in 2022, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, Château Angelus, and Château Pavie were the only four members of the Premier Grand Cru Classé A tier. Out of disagreement with the standard-setting governing body, Cheval Blanc and Ausone voluntarily dropped out. Angelus followed suit shortly after. With Pavie remaining the only member, Premier Grand Cru Classé A saw the addition of Château Figeac following a long-expected and well-deserved promotion.

Saint-Émilion wines are known for their finesse, complex aromas, and beautiful balance of fruit, tannins, and acidity. While they share some similarities with wines from the neighboring Pomerol appellation, they often have a slightly more structured and tannic character due to the higher proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends. With age, these wines develop a velvety texture and reveal an array of flavors, including dark fruits, floral notes, and hints of earthiness.

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. As of June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. Accordingly, such import taxes are now suspended for the next five years.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
