AOC - Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée

AOC is the abbreviation for Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, which means "regulated wine of origin". It is a French regulatory system designed to ensure the wines produced are of higher quality. They are governed by strict rules. These rules include:

  • methods of growing and producing,
  • localization,
  • grape-variety,
  • minimum contents of alcohol, etc.

All AOC wines are analyzed and tasted. The very strict nature of the legislation, and ongoing practice, guarantees an excellent quality of AOC wines.  Some winemakers have found the AOC laws so restrictive that they have left the French market all together to embrace the American system of looser rules.
