Château Calong-Ségur, an accidental wine for Valentine's Day
No one knows how the design came about, but a heart shape ended up on the wine label of Château Calon-Ségur. Maybe the winemaker is communicating that he puts his heart into every bottle? Just maybe.
I bet you wouldn't know this wine is the most popular selection for Valentine's Day. The heart, obviously, goes a long way. This is even recognized in the Japanese pop culture dominated by manga, as Château Calon-Ségur was mentioned in the comic series on wine created by Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto. We have comics on super heroes, they have comics on cultural icons.
Cultural sentiment is not the only reason we see Château Calon-Ségur capturing buyers' fancy, also not only around Valentine's Day. This wine is a solid, top-rated palate pleaser year after year. The quality is superb. Here is the Tasting Notes of 2016 vintage by The Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Calon-Ségur is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot aged in 100% new French oak for 20 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it is a little closed to begin, slowly revealing warm red and black currants, kirsch and plum preserves with wafts of fragrant earth, violets, chocolate box and wood smoke. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly expressed and finely crafted, it has a wonderfully fine-grained texture and bold freshness supporting the densely packed black fruits, finishing long and mineral-laced." - Lisa Perotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (11/30/2018, Interim Issue), Ratings: 96
